Notice Regarding Photography of the Ruddy Kingfisher at the Summit of Mt. Haguro

Important – News released on the Dewa Sanzan shrine’s Japanese website on May 4, 2025
In recent years, during the spring and summer seasons, rare migratory birds known as ruddy kingfishers (Akashobin) have been observed flying to the Kagami Pond area at the summit of Mt. Haguro to nest and raise their young.
As a result, the number of photographers visiting the area has increased. However, scenes of large camera lined up in front of the main shrine—effectively occupying the sacred space—are inappropriate for a site of prayer and worship, and have prompted concern and complaints from many visitors and worshippers.
While we recognize the unique natural environment and ecosystem of the mountain, and acknowledge the site’s value as a tourist destination, we believe that certain regulations are necessary to preserve the sanctity of the area and maintain a respectful balance.
Accordingly, beginning this year, designated zones will be established for photographing wild birds.
- Photography will be permitted only in a designated area southwest of Kagami Pond.
- Hours for photography: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- The designated area will be clearly marked with signs.
We kindly ask all photographers for their understanding and cooperation in preserving the dignity of this sacred space.
